Shabbona is a village in southwestern DeKalb County on U.S. Route 30, named for the Potawatomi leader Shabbona, who lived in this area in the early 1800s. The village itself is small and residential, with older homes on tree-lined streets and farmland stretching away on all sides. Just south and east of town, Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area surrounds a man-made lake with woods, prairie plantings and campgrounds that draw visitors from across northern Illinois. The state recreation area around Shabbona Lake includes woods, wetland edges and restored prairie, creating habitat that is rare in the surrounding cropland. Garter, fox and water snakes live along the shoreline and in grassy areas and occasionally find their way into garages or basements. None are venomous. Field Mice and the Farm Year

Outside the lake area, Shabbona is surrounded by productive corn and soybean fields.
