Pest Control Across McHenry County

McHenry County sits at the far northwest edge of Chicagoland, and much of its landscape was shaped by glaciers. Kettle lakes such as Crystal Lake, marshes, gravel ridges and the hills of Glacial Park give it a very different feel from the flat suburbs closer in. The Fox River runs along the eastern side past Johnsburg, McHenry, Fox River Grove, Cary and Algonquin, while Nippersink Creek and the headwaters of the Kishwaukee River drain the interior. The McHenry County Conservation District protects wetlands, woods and prairie across the county. Housing has three main stories: older lake cottages and river homes, historic downtown neighborhoods in Woodstock, Harvard and Marengo, and a wave of subdivisions from the 1990s and 2000s in Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Algonquin and Crystal Lake. Farmland still surrounds much of it.

Lake and River Homes from Wonder Lake to the Fox

Around Wonder Lake, the lakes near McHenry and Johnsburg, and the Fox River shoreline, many homes began as weekend cottages. Over the decades they were enlarged and winterized, often leaving crawlspaces, old siding seams and mismatched rooflines that mice and bats can exploit. Waterfront properties produce heavy insect activity in summer, which feeds bats and spiders and draws them toward porches and eaves. Raccoons travel shorelines, and garter snakes and northern water snakes sun themselves on rock walls and docks. Because these homes sit in damp ground, millipedes, earwigs and house centipedes are frequent visitors in lower levels, particularly during wet springs, after high water on the Fox and during early fall cool spells.

The 1990s and 2000s Growth Belt

Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Algonquin and parts of Crystal Lake and Cary grew quickly on former farmland and open space as the region expanded northwest. These subdivisions tend to have tight modern construction, but they share borders with fields, detention ponds and conservation land. Field mice and house mice commonly find their way into attached garages and then into walls. Eastern moles tunnel through lawns, and ground-nesting yellowjackets can be a late-summer surprise in landscaping beds. Retention ponds attract geese and support mosquitoes. As trees planted during construction have matured, squirrels have become more of a presence too, and homeowners increasingly report them chewing into attic vents and gutters.

Farm Country Around Harvard, Marengo and Richmond

Western and northern McHenry County remain rural, with dairy and grain farms around Harvard, Marengo, Richmond and Spring Grove. Homes on acreage often have barns, machine sheds and woodpiles that shelter house mice, deer mice and Norway rats, particularly after harvest. Pigeons, house sparrows and European starlings nest in outbuildings and vents. Striped skunks, opossums and raccoons den under porches and outbuildings, and bats roost in barns and older farmhouse attics. Many rural homes rely on wells and septic systems, so homeowners often prefer targeted, careful treatments. Deer mice are worth extra caution because their droppings can carry hantavirus, making careful, well-ventilated cleanup of cabins, sheds and seasonal buildings important.
