DuPage County grew from a patchwork of railroad towns into one of the most built-out suburban counties in Illinois. Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn and Downers Grove developed around commuter rail stations and still hold many homes from the early and middle twentieth century. After the East-West Tollway and I-355 opened, subdivisions spread across former farmland in Naperville, Carol Stream, Bloomingdale and Woodridge. Running through it all are the East and West Branches of the DuPage River and Salt Creek, plus a forest preserve district of more than 25,000 acres. Those green corridors keep wildlife close to backyards, and the county's large, established trees give squirrels plenty of room. Inside, homeowners mostly battle mice, ants and occasional cockroaches, while termites remain a quiet concern in older neighborhoods where wood porches and sill plates have been in place for generations.

Living Along the DuPage River and Salt Creek

The West Branch of the DuPage River winds through West Chicago, Warrenville and Naperville, the East Branch runs past Glen Ellyn, Lisle and Woodridge, and Salt Creek crosses Wood Dale, Elmhurst and Oak Brook. These waterways flood from time to time, and their low-lying neighborhoods tend to hold moisture in soil and basements. Damp conditions draw millipedes, earwigs, house centipedes and silverfish indoors, especially in finished lower levels. Rising water also pushes mice and Norway rats toward higher ground near homes. Creekside trails and wooded banks give raccoons and skunks protected travel lanes, so houses within a few blocks of the water often see more digging in lawns and more animals under decks and porches.

Forest Preserves, the Prairie Path and Backyard Wildlife

Preserves such as Herrick Lake, Blackwell, Danada, Fullersburg Woods and Waterfall Glen sit right beside residential streets, and the Illinois Prairie Path links many of them. For wildlife, those connections act like highways. Raccoons move from preserve woods into attics and chimneys, eastern gray and fox squirrels leap from mature oaks onto rooflines, and striped skunks den beneath sheds and concrete stoops. Opossums often follow the same routes. Big brown bats roost in older attics and occasionally end up in living spaces during late summer. Because many of these animals are protected by seasonal rules or need humane handling, homeowners usually rely on wildlife specialists to remove them and close the gaps they used to get in.

Older Railroad Towns Versus Newer Subdivisions

Pest problems in DuPage often depend on the age of the house. In older sections of Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Villa Park and Lombard, fieldstone and block foundations, wood porches and aging window wells give mice, carpenter ants and termites more ways in. Large lots with decades-old maples and oaks also mean more branches touching roofs. In newer areas of Naperville, Aurora's DuPage side, Carol Stream and Bartlett, homes built on former farm fields see field mice and eastern moles, especially in the first years after construction when landscaping is still settling. Pavement ants and odorous house ants are common in both settings, nesting under slabs, driveways and patios and trailing into kitchens each spring.
