Pest Control Across Lake County

Few counties in the region pack in as much water as Lake County. Its eastern edge is a line of Lake Michigan bluffs and ravines running from Highland Park to Winthrop Harbor, while its western half is dotted with glacial lakes, from the Chain O'Lakes around Fox Lake and Antioch to Round Lake, Wauconda's Bangs Lake and Lake Zurich. The Des Plaines River flows south through the middle of the county, and the Lake County Forest Preserves protect more than 30,000 acres of woods, prairie and wetland. Housing ranges from historic estates in Lake Forest to early twentieth-century homes in Waukegan and North Chicago, lake cottages converted to year-round use, and large subdivisions built on farmland around Grayslake, Gurnee and Lindenhurst. All that water and woodland keeps wildlife, moisture pests and rodents busy.

Chain O'Lakes Cottages and Lakeside Neighborhoods

Around Fox Lake, Antioch, Round Lake Beach and Island Lake, many homes started as summer cottages and were later winterized and expanded. Additions, crawlspaces, raised foundations and older wood framing leave small gaps that house mice and deer mice use to get inside as nights cool. Waterfront lots also bring moisture, and that means spiders, earwigs, millipedes and house centipedes in lower levels. Shoreline vegetation draws garter snakes and water snakes, which are harmless but unsettling near a back door. Muskrats and raccoons travel along channels and marsh edges, and boathouses or sheds that sit unused through winter become easy den sites. Pest pressure here tends to spike each spring and again in early fall.

North Shore Ravines and Mature Estates

Highland Park, Lake Forest and Lake Bluff are cut by steep wooded ravines that drain into Lake Michigan. Those ravines act as sheltered corridors for raccoons, opossums, foxes and skunks, and they connect directly to backyards. Large lots with century-old oaks give eastern gray squirrels and fox squirrels easy access to slate and cedar roofs, and older homes often have chimneys, dormers and decorative eaves that animals can exploit. Big brown and little brown bats roost in attics near the lake, especially in older construction. Inside, carpenter ants are a frequent complaint in homes shaded by heavy canopy where wood trim and decks stay damp. Wildlife specialists here often focus on exclusion work that respects historic building materials.

Farmland Subdivisions and Forest Preserve Edges

Central and western Lake County changed quickly in the 1990s and 2000s as fields around Grayslake, Gurnee, Libertyville, Mundelein, Hawthorn Woods and Lake Villa became subdivisions. Many of these neighborhoods border forest preserves such as Lakewood, Middlefork Savanna, Almond Marsh or the Des Plaines River Trail. Newer homes still get field mice, especially in garages and utility rooms, and eastern moles tunnel through fresh sod on former farm soil. Retention ponds throughout these developments attract geese and keep mosquitoes and midges active. Farther east, older neighborhoods in Waukegan, North Chicago and Zion see more Norway rats, cockroaches in multi-unit buildings and termites in aging wood porches, fences and detached garages.
